The MMD Group welcomes MEP Michalis Hadjipantela (EPP, Cyprus)
20 November 2025
The MMD Group is delighted to welcome Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Michalis Hadjipantela (EPP, Cyprus) as a new member. MEP Hadjipantela serves as a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON), the Committee on Public Health (SANT), the Subcommittee on Tax Matters (FISC) and the Delegation for relations with Iran (D-IR). He is also a substitute member of the Committee on Budgets (BUDG), the Committee on the Environment, Climate and Food Safety (ENVI), the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), as well as the Delegations for relations with the United States (D-US) and with the People’s Republic of China (D-CN).
Before being elected to the European Parliament, MEP Hadjipantela served as Minister of Health in Cyprus from 2021 to 2024, where he focused on improving healthcare access and strengthening public health policies. Building on this experience, advancing health—particularly the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs)—remains a central priority in his work as an MEP.
One of MEP Hadjipantela’s core priorities is reducing the prevalence of NCDs in the EU and ensuring timely access to high-quality care. NCDs remain the leading cause of preventable disease and premature death, accounting for nearly 90% of premature mortality according to the World Health Organization. Diabetes is a major NCD and is closely linked with many others. Prevention, early diagnosis, and timely management are essential, as diabetes can be the root cause of multiple life-threatening complications. For example, one in three people living with diabetes will develop kidney disease, one in five will develop cancer, and one in three will experience cardiovascular disease. Strengthening prevention, improving early detection, and ensuring timely treatment are crucial not only to prevent diabetes-related complications but also to significantly reduce the overall burden of other NCDs.
We wish to thank MEP Hadjipantela for his support and look forward to strengthening our collaboration to advance NCD prevention and care across the EU.
