MMD members join the diabetes community in celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Diabetes Resolution

24 November 2023

During 22-24 November, members of the MEPs Mobilising for Diabetes interest group at the European Parliament (EP) released video statements and postcards on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the EP Resolution on Diabetes. MEPs used this occasion to recall the ambitious calls to action made in the resolution to improve diabetes prevention, management and care and call on the Commission and Member States to focus on their implementation.

The MEPs highlighted that 32 million people live with diabetes in the European Union and the numbers are projected to increase to 33 million by 2030. Given the fact that 1/3 of Europeans living with diabetes are undiagnosed and up to half of them do not achieve their treatment targets, many develop one or more health complications. These devastating complications negatively affect people’s quality of life and place a huge burden on our healthcare systems. To improve healthcare systems’ resilience and people’s quality of life as well as reduce inequalities, MEPs highlighted the role of effective, quality diabetes prevention, management and care as a clear marker of health systems’ performance, benefitting all people living with diabetes and other chronic conditions.

We thank all the participating MEPs for advocating for ambitious policy action on diabetes and representing the voice of people living with diabetes at the policy level. We would like to share our special appreciation with the rapporteurs for the Resolution, MMD co-chair and all the diabetes champions: MEP Franc Bogovič, MEP Sara Cerdas, MEP Tomasz Frankowski, MEP Romana Jerković, MEP Kateřina Konečná, MEP Tilly Metz, MEP Aldo Patriciello, MEP Sirpa Pietikäinen, MEP Frédérique Ries, MEP Christel Schaldemose, MEP Tomislav Sokol, MEP István Ujhelyi

Together, United, Let’s Accelerate Action on Diabetes!
