Addressing the growing prevalence of diabetes and obesity
29 January 2026
On January 29, 2026, MMD Member, MEP Romana Jerković, hosted IDF Europe’s event — “Addressing the growing prevalence of diabetes and obesity” at the European Parliament.
Moderated by Marian Brennan, Communications & Engagement Manager at IDF Europe, the event brought together policymakers, healthcare professionals (HCPs), people with lived experience of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity and other experts to discuss prevention, early detection, timely treatment and equitable access to care.
In her opening remarks, MEP Jerković stressed the need to align policy with the latest evidence and innovations in diabetes and obesity care. She highlighted the importance of creating health-enabling environments, tackling the commercial determinants of health, strengthening health literacy and empowering people to live healthier lives: “prevention, access to care and patient rights are not optional — they are essential. To make the EU stronger and more resilient, we need a healthier EU.”
Speakers shared powerful insights and lived experiences. Advocates highlighted the challenges of stigma and the critical role of supportive, person-centred care in healthcare settings, workplaces and communities. HCPs emphasised the urgent need for integrated care, early intervention and policy strategies that address disparities, improve access to essential treatments and promote lifelong health.
In closing, speakers underlined the importance of listening directly to people with lived experience to guide policymaking and ensure that interventions truly improve lives.
IDF Europe warmly thanks all speakers and participants, especially the advocates who shared their personal stories and experiences, making the discussions deeply impactful and inspiring. We extend a special thanks to MEP Jerković for her valuable contribution and hosting the event.
