MMD Member MEP Romana Jerković highlights diabetes in plenary speech ahead of World Diabetes Day

15 November 2025

On November 12, during the mini-plenary session of the European Parliament in Brussels, MMD Member MEP Romana Jerković (S&D, Croatia), took the floor to dedicate her one-minute contribution to diabetes, ahead of World Diabetes Day taking place the following day.

In her speech, MEP Jerković urged the European Institutions to elevate diabetes as a priority on the EU health agenda. She stressed the need for stronger action to advance diabetes prevention, ensure earlier diagnosis, and support innovative treatment for people living with diabetes.

MEP Jerković’s speech:

“14 November marks World Diabetes Day. Diabetes is one of the most widespread diseases globally, affecting more than 33 million Europeans, and it comes with serious complications such as cardiovascular disease and blindness. Many people still lack access to proper diagnosis and prevention. For example, Type 1 Diabetes is often detected only once severe complications have already occurred, and far too many people live with the condition without knowing it.
How long must we wait before diabetes becomes a true European priority? We are calling for better prevention, earlier diagnosis and innovative treatment for all people living with diabetes in Europe.”

The MMD Group stands ready to build on her message and to support its members, including MEP Romana Jerković, in advancing diabetes prevention, earlier diagnosis and access to innovative treatment across Europe.
